is not an act but a habit

December is here at last! You can officially say goodbye to those light jackets and break out the heavy-duty snow pants! The season is still in its first stages, but before you know it the snow will be melting (with any luckJ) and NHSA Championships will be right around the corner! As for now it’s all about getting your meets in, working hard at practice, taking care of your body, and strapping yourself in for a nice, cold winter.

A REMINDER TO SWIMMERS AND PARENTS:

To be eligible for NHSA Champs swimmers must participate in at least 3 of the following meets (2 for High School Swimmers). Be sure to get all of your meets in!

·         October 24: Dual Meet @ Manchester SNHU

·         November 8: Home Meet vs. Nashua

·         December 6: Home Meet vs. Peterborough

·         December 12-14: Team Specialty Meet @ Dartmouth

·         January 2-4: Team Specialty Meet @ Colby Sawyer

·         January 17: Home Meet vs. Concord and ESC

(For this entire season’s calendar visit http://www.mv.com/org/rays-nh/schedule.html.)

RAYS vs PETERBOROUGH MEET:

Sign Ups for the Rays vs. Peterborough Meet (to be held December 7th) end on Tuesday, December 2nd at 5:00 pm. This is a great meet to get a look at what kind of shape swimmers are in at this point in the season, as well as an excellent opportunity to get one of the 3 required meets for eligibility at NHSA Championships in. Warm ups for this meet will be at 7:30 am and you can sign up online by visiting http://www.mv.com/org/rays-nh/meetsignup/peterb.html.

POSITIVE PARENTING TIPS:

(Courtesy of http://www.usaswimming.org)

  1. Your child needs your emotional, physical, and financial support. Be liberal in providing this support.
  2. Support but do not push your child.
  3. Understand development – long-term development as an athlete, and growth and development as it impacts performance.
  4. Be realistic in terms of expectations; factor in age and skill level; be aware of your child’s perception of your expectations.
  5. Emphasize performance and effort, not just outcome. The athlete only has control over his/her performance. Define and measure success as giving maximal effort and as personal improvement.
  6. Keep winning in perspective.
  7. Do not bribe.
  8. Give plenty of encouraging and rewarding statements. Criticize sparingly.
  9. View swimming as an arena in which to teach your child about commitment, hard work, and coping with adversity.
  10. Work to form an effective Coach-Athlete-Parent Triangle.
