**Interesting fact - 5 of the events she broke the records for 13-14 and open in the prelims, and then came back at night and broke the new records.

The previous weekend at UNH she broke the 13-14 200 IM record with 2:23:68.

Paulina almost broke Karen O’Sullivan's 200 breast record, she was off by 2 tenths.

Andrew Willbrant broke the open 200 back 2:00:00 (can you get any closer to breaking 2 minutes?) and the 1000 free 10:18:43. He also broke the 200 back in prelims and then came back and broke it again at finals

On Nov. 4th, 2005, Alex Flinn set a new 9 & 10 record for the 500 free, with a time of 7:32.89. He also broke the 9 & 10 record for the 200 IM, with a time of 3:23.31. At that same meet Andrew Willbrant broke the open 200 fly with a time of 2:13.64.  Mandy Avella broke the 11 & 12 record for the 100 breaststroke with a 1:21.52. Rachel Flinn broke three 13 & 14 records, for the 200 free with a 2:03.69, the 1000 free with an 11:28.27, and the 1650 free with a 19:31.17. Rachel’s time for the 1000 free also beat the open record time.

On Nov. 13th, 2005, Andrew Willbrant broke the open records for the 1000 free with a 10:47.74, and the 1650 free with a 17:54.40. Mandy Avella broke the 11 & 12 50 breaststroke with a 37.37. Rachel Flinn got a 5:02.68 in her 400 IM, which beat both the old 13 & 14 and open records.

What Kind of Swimmer Am I?

As published on FINS website

·         Am I the first person to get in the water at practice?

·         Do I offer to help put the lane lines in?

·         Do I stay in the locker room until warm ups are over?

·         Do I lead my lane as often as I can?

·         Do I let others go ahead of me if I’m slowing them down?

·         Do I push every part of the set?

·         Do I hand back and only push the last one in the set?

·         Do I pull on the lane lines?

·         Do I swim EVERY YARD of the practice I attend?

·         Do I go to the bathroom when the set gets hard?

·         Do my goggles have a perpetual leak?

·         Do I ignore technique instructions because I’m fast anyway?

·         Do I encourage my teammates when the sets get hard?

·         Do I own a pair of goggles or do I just borrow from the coach?

·         Do I know when I shouldn’t be leading the lane?

·         Do I understand words like descend?

·         Do I draft off my teammates instead of leading and then not go ahead of them when I should?

·         Do I wait the full five seconds before going after the person ahead of me?

·         Do I make room for my teammates to finish on the wall?

·         Do I let someone who tagged my feet go ahead of me?

·         Do I stop when everyone else does even though I’ve been lapped in a set?

·         Only you can answer these questions honestly and I hope that you always swim with courtesy of your teammates.

Featured Swimmer

Lauren Courtemanche RAYS 2005

At just 8 years of age, Lauren Courtemanche has already competed in several “kid triathlons”! They consist of 100 yard swim, 1 mile bike, as well as, ½ mile run.  At Ironman, Lake Placid, she competed in the “Splash and Dash” where she finished first in the 8 & under age group! She was introduced to swimming as a 4 year old at the ANA YMCA.  Now, she is in the third grade, and this is her third season as a member of the RAYS swim team.  She swims two nights a week in the 10 & under practice and, at times, attends the 11 & older practice where she leads her lane.

Lauren is a joy to have at practice.  She is a great competitor who is determined to do her best at all times.  With her winning attitude, it won’t be long before she is at the top of her age group.  Her personal goals for the 2005-2006 season are to swim the 100 yard IM in 1:40, 50 yard butterfly in 40 seconds, and improve in all her other strokes.  Lauren loves swimming because of the challenge, exercise, competition, and friends that she has made.  Her favorite workouts include sets of IM and butterfly.  Jenny Thompson and Michael Phelps are her favorite athletes.

Her most exciting swimming moment was when she took 16 seconds off her 100 IM at the RAYS Pentathlon in October of this year.  The best advice she ever got before a race was “swim hard, do your best, and most importantly is to have fun”.  Her after-school activities include volleyball, gymnastics, basketball, and softball.  As soon as she gets to fifth grade, she plans to join cross-country as well.

Acknowledgements

A special thank you to Coach Maryann who made a special trip to the December 10th meet before heading to Keene for her own daughter's swim meet.  Maryann knew a few of her younger swimmers would be swimming last Saturday and she came to encourage them on.  Her reassurances especially to our son Richard Hume made all the difference.  By his last heat he was ready to take the medal stand for coming in first.  This was his first competition as a swimmer and a most memorable one too!  Thank you Coach Maryann and all the other coaches who bring the best out of our young swimmers.
